DEC Phase 2 Drought Response in East Africa

This project provides continuing support for people affected by the drought in East Africa. It supports interventions in Ethiopia and South Sudan. It is funded jointly by Age International and the Disaster Emergency Committee. <p/><p/> In Ethiopia, activities will take place in Borena. Outputs focus on addressing malnutrition, identifying and supporting approximately 1,000 vulnerable older people, providing with age-appropriate supplementary food or supported with Ready to Use Therapeutic Feeding (RUTF), depending on their specific needs and enrolling them in community level (outpatient) and health facility (inpatient) facilities. 50 health care workers will simultaneously receive training on how to diagnose and care for older people with malnutrition and how to provide appropriate emergency treatment. Awareness raising on the needs of older people will be supported, with a focus on capacity building and training. Older Person Associations (OPAs) in target locations, helping these OPAs to learn how to identify and support vulnerable older people in humanitarian emergencies, and will be equipped with key influencing and advocacy skills to lobby for the inclusion and mainstreaming of older people in emergency responses in Ethiopia. <p/><p/>In South Sudan, phase 2 aims to increase the knowledge and capacity of humanitarian actors including UN clusters, government, NGOs, NRC, and other humanitarian stakeholders on how to include older people and people with disabilities in emergency response programming. It is anticipated that project activities will increase in the number of older people and people with disabilities targeted by and benefitting from humanitarian response agencies interventions across South Sudan.
