In Uganda, Caritas Denmark has worked with five local partners since 2001 with MFA funding. The engagement during 2018-2021 amounts to DKK 36.8 million and will enhance sustainable rural development, through strengthening farmers’ associations and advocacy at national level. This will be facilitated through a network of Ugandan CBOs/NGOs, led by Caritas Uganda, supported by Caritas Denmark. In the years to come, with a humanitarian-development nexus approach more emphasis will be placed on climate change mitigation to reduce the effect on rural livelihoods and threat to the development of farmers associations. Interventions will strengthen the resilience of local communities in cooperation with relevant local authorities, including ensuring the participation of civil society in local development planning. The growing number of unemployed youth is a cause for concern in Uganda, as they tend to migrate to the urban city centres where they become part of the growing number of urban poor. Caritas Denmark and partners will apply innovative ways of including youth in economic development based on previous pilot activities and evidence-based information gathered from target group feedback. The retention of youth in rural areas is key for the labour intensive sustainable agricultural practices required to adapt to the changing climate.
