Embedding legality and sustainability in timber production and trade through finance sector engagement
By increasing forestry sector transparency in China, Indonesia, Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, Gabon, and other deforestation-risk geographies, SPOTT will facilitate enhanced due diligence and engagement by key financial institutions and other influencers, thereby incentivising legal and sustainable forest management and trade. In doing so, the project will help to deliver biodiversity protection and secure essential ecosystem services for forest dependent people.

Sustainable community-based stewardship of freshwater resources in the Philippines.
We will protect and manage freshwater biodiversity through the use of improved Freshwater Sanctuaries – previously identified by communities as growth areas for anguillid eels, a keystone species in the region – that incorporate river banks, manage the impact of invasive species and link to proven sustainable community-level institutions. This will provide a model for community-based freshwater management in developing nations.

Ghodaghodi’s Guardians: Communities restoring a Ramsar wetland at watershed scale
Ghodaghodi Lake Area’s (GLA’s) globally-significant wetland-biodiversity and its critical connectivity in the Western Terai Complex (WTC) constitutes local communities’ natural capital.
This project will develop and implement community-led natural capital-based management plans, which benefit livelihoods; secure and prioritise GLA’s upstream watershed and conservation; implement sustainable tourism management; and conduct biological monitoring. This will protect GLA and provide a model for expansion.

Understanding immediate impacts of Covid-19 on coastal communities in Mozambique
The project aims to fill critical gaps in our understanding of the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of Covid-19 on coastal communities in northern Mozambique. The data will inform development of coping mechanisms for communities, increase resilience to shocks and support recommendations for scalable community-based solutions. We will focus on enhancing knowledge around key pillars including governance and co-management of marine resources, community behaviour and biological impact on fisheries, to inform the knowledge base and strategies for long term community resilience.

Driving transparent, legal and sustainable forestry practices through financial, market and governance incentives
This project will significantly increase SPOTT’s ability to influence major producers and traders of for-est-products from FLEGT-VPA countries, major trading hubs (including China), and other high-risk are-as. This will be achieved by strengthening the alignment of SPOTT to legal and best practice reform processes (e.g. FLEGT-VPA, REDD+, SDGs); multi-year SPOTT assessments of major traders and pro-ducers; briefings, analysis and technical support delivered through a formalised network of major financial institutions (and other influencers); and improvements to SPOTT’s online platform.

Mongolia's New Ecological Police: Global Standards and Community Engagementt
This collaboratively designed project will build upon ZSL's past two IWT CF projects, and ZSL's upcoming Segre funded project. This project will, bring ZSL’s UK partners/international standards, will decrease poaching and disrupt trade through four components: 1) building EPD and partners’ LE efficacy by institutionalising a training curriculum and cadre of trainers, enabling intra-agency collaboration; 2) increasing EPD strategic targeting and national standards for Detector Dog Units’ (DDU) training, handling and deployment across LE agencies and IWT hotspots and upgrading facilities; 3) strengthening EPD's rural engagement which empowers vulnerable rural communities to mitigate IWT by partnering at a demonstration site - Arkhangai Local Protected Area (LPA) that can support governance, income diversification and improved well-being; and 4) bolstering EPD’s national recognition as a leading IWT LE agency through public awareness and results-sharing.

Protecting Mongolia’s Gobi Desert for wild camels and herder communities
This landscape is currently threatened by a host of environmental and social issues, including: overgrazing by livestock; habitat degradation and waterhole loss, exacerbated by climate change; domestic-wild camel cross-breeding; and manmade barriers to long-distance wildlife migration. Indigenous herder livelihoods are equally vulnerable to climate change, water scarcity and rangeland degradation. Government and communities alike have lacked mechanisms and resources to collaborate across this vast landscape to share knowledge, experience, and tackle threats.

Securing Chitwan-Sindhuli Green Corridor; strengthening community stewardship and law enforcement
This project aims to address these challenges by: 1) strengthening capacity and improving transboundary LE coordination, and 2) building capacity of newly established provincial LE agencies by enabling data sharing and intra-agency enforcement efforts to disrupt priority IWT trafficking routes and international wildlife crime through Nepal. 3) by securing community stewardship at key pangolin source sites outside the PA network, through proven Community Management Pangolin Conservation Areas (CMPCAs) which empower communities to manage their community forests, protect pangolins and participate with LE agencies 4) improving well-being through community-led sustainable livelihood schemes, promoting gender equity and social inclusion, increasing local economic and ecological resilience, further “future-proofing” community engagement.

Building effective and equitable multi-stakeholder mitigation for HWC in Tsavo
This project will build the capacity and capability of all stakeholders in the landscape to tackle HWC collectively. It will strengthen protected area management’s ability to engage communities, especially women and marginalised groups, in participatory, equitable ways, and will facilitate the co-development of solutions to HWC, helping deliver Kenya Wildlife Service’s Strategic Plan 2019-2024. This project seeks to build the capacity of KWS-Tsavo to reduce community grievances regarding KWS and protected areas, resulting from HWC, through improving KWS-community collaboration, decision-making processes and governance structures, guided by international best practice, including IUCN Guidelines for HWC

Turning the Tide on Plastic Pollution: Ascension and St Helena
This project, building upon previous successes, will replicate and scale an effective intervention to tackle systemic drivers of plastic pollution on St Helena and Ascension.
With limited land and resources, remote islands such as St Helena and Ascension rely on waste disposal into landfill and/or incineration, the majority of which is single-use plastic (SUP).
This project will create conditions for island stakeholders to reduce SUP use, improve associated waste management efficiency, and contribute to marine conservation, benefiting the ocean and key wildlife species by 2025.

Terai Arc: Community stewardship to secure wildlife corridors and livelihoods
Protected areas in Nepal’s Terai Arc Landscape are fragmented, meaning recovering wildlife populations (like tiger and rhino) in Parsa National Park are pushed towards human settlements in surrounding buffer zones, increasing human-wildlife conflict, with particularly negative impacts for women and Indigenous communities disproportionately reliant on forest resources. This project will secure connectivity between protected areas and northern Shivalik hills using a corridor of community-managed forests; mitigate human-wildlife conflict; and reduce communities’ dependence on resources through diversified livelihoods and enhanced agroforestry.

Mainstreaming livelihoods, health, poverty, and wellbeing into EDGE species conservation
This project will strengthen the EDGE network of early career conservationists in biodiversity hotspots in Asia, Africa and Latin America and build their capacity to integrate livelihoods, health, poverty and wellbeing considerations into their work. By building in-country capacity to deliver effective biodiversity-poverty reduction programming, we can contribute towards ensuring future conservation projects understand, respect and respond appropriately to the needs and interests of local communities, and contribute to the dual aims of poverty reduction and conservation.
The project will result in the conservation of EDGE species and increase the conservation capacity of conservationists across the globe.

Protection to community engagement: Managing Nepal’s youngest transborder National Park
The project will strengthen the status of tigers and tiger prey in Banke National Park (BaNP), (Nepal’s newest
NP) while improving the socio-economic wellbeing of residents in two buffer zone communities, strengthening
the relationship between park and people. These aims will be achieved by better management of the park’s
wildlife and habitats to improve tiger prey density, reducing human-wildlife conflict (HWC)developing
conservation awareness and facilitating stewardship among communities, and the promotion of alternative
income streams including tourism.
