Nepal Earthquake Response
Following the Nepal Earthquake on 25 April 2015, the UK deployed military aircraft to transport over 148 tonnes of humanitarian aid to and around the region. We also airlifted 33 civilians who needed evacuating to safety from Kathmandu airport. This spend includes the deployment and recovery of one C-17, one C-130 and three CH47s, with associated personnel and equipment, and an Operational Liaison and Reconnaissance Team. The funding was transferred to MoD from DfID during the 2015 Supplementary Estimate process.

Defence Education - Working in the maritime Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
This is an MOD course, delivered by the Defence Academy is designed specifically to relate to working and /or serving in the international maritime Exclusive Economic Zone, as defined by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the sea, with a particular focus on the range and use of applications of international law with respect to the scope of conduct of activity in the Exclusive Economic Zone. Working in the maritime Exclusive Economic Zone course also covers aspects of disaster relief preparedness.
Currently, 50% of the course curriculum is ODA eligible. Only the ODA eligible elements of the course have thus been recorded.
Objective: * Teach partner nations how international law applies to EEZs and how activity should be conducted in those areas. * Articulate the relation between the UN Convention of Sea, and highlight how this informs the legality of activity in the EEZ.

Managing Defence in the Wider Security Context (MDWSC) is a course delivered to personnel from the Defence & Security sector, enhancing your knowledge of your national defence and security systems enhancing your analytical skills to help improve and transform governance and management assessing your national security within the international context evaluating current challenges to state sovereignty gaining a better appreciation of the critical importance of effective governance in defence assessing how defence is managed and how changes can be introduced effectively.
It is particularly relevant to countries making the transition from authoritarian rule to democracy, or emerging from conflict, and seeks to reinforce good practice in relation to civilian oversight and control of the armed forces, focusing on issues including democratic control and civilian oversight, transparency, corruption and the rule of law. .

The Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) is a postgraduate education course for military and civilian personnel, focused on international security and strategic studies. The course contributes to the development of senior leaders and seeks to improve their ability to deal with security challenges in an effective and responsible manner, including by addressing issues such as human rights and rule of law, international humanitarian law, protection of civilians in conflict, anti-corruption and transparency, civilian oversight and democratic control of Armed Forces.

Defence Education - Advanced Command & Staff Course
The Advanced command and Staff Course (ACSC) is a postgraduate education course for military and civilian personnel, and it aims to prepare all defence personnel for senior positions by developing their skills and abilities in order equip them to deal with all manner of security challenges in an effective and responsible manner. It addresses issues such as human rights and rule of law, international humanitarian law, protection of civilians in conflict, anti-corruption and transparency, civilian oversight and democratic control of Armed Forces.
The aim of the course is to cultivate officers and individuals for high grade assignments, including command by developing their effective intellect, with associated analytical decision making and communication skills, complemented by broadening of their professional knowledge and perspective through: a deeper appreciation of single service, joint, combined and multi-agency operations a better understanding of the higher management of Defence a comprehensive grasp of strategy, security and defence in a political, international and financial context To act as a catalyst for attitudinal and behavioural change through learning.

The Building Integrity for Senior Leaders (BISL) Course is focused at the One- and Two-star level (military and civilian officials from the wider defence and security sector) to examine the key aspects of leadership and change management in addressing the risk of corruption within the defence and security sector in: finance, acquisition and procurement, human resource management and on operations.
The aim of the course is to enhance the awareness of the risks of corruption and of the measures than can be used to reduce the risk of its effects within defence. The course objectives are to: - Raise understanding of the challenges posed by corruption. - Appreciate the risks within Defence and Security sector acquisition, finance and HR. - Recognise the corruption risks on operations and during conflict resolution. - Assess the importance of leadership and strategic communications in challenging and changing behaviours.
