Improved access to WASH for disadvantaged communities in Zimbabwe-MF4
Part of the Match Fund 4 project (including projects in DRC and Uganda) this project aims to increase sustainable access to improved WASH facilities in rural disadvantaged communities in Zimbabwe. We will directly provide WASH services alongside investing in social mobilisation of communities to influence local government on policy implementation, and strengthen water user groups to adopt correct use and maintenance of water points.
The beneficiary communities were selected due to their high levels of vulnerability to droughts and inadequate access to WASH services and facilities. These target groups also experience interrupted access to clean drinking water due to non-functional hand pumps. Specific groups to be reached within the selected underserved communities include women and men in underserved villages including female headed households, the elderly, people with disabilities, and people living with HIV/AIDS.
The targeted districts Binga and Gokwe are among the poorest and most marginalised areas of Zimbabwe, prone to food insecurity and with very poor infrastructure and service provision. These areas are geographically remote with very poor soils and arid landscapes, characterised by livestock rearing as the main livelihoods option, with a consequently widely-spaced population; hence difficult to access for service provision. As a consequence of limited access to adequate WASH services, communities in these districts are very vulnerable to diarrhoea.
The livelihoods of the local population are also heavily affected by the water access restrictions. Livestock rearing, the main livelihoods activity, is hindered by the difficulty in reaching reliable sources of drinking water.
A weak economy and poor institutional capacity are leading to inadequate water sector investment, inappropriate use of water supply technologies and are contributing to depleting the communities’ skill base. The situation is exacerbated by the absence of a holistic and coordinated approach to water and land management in the target districts. Water resources are currently managed by different government ministries, resulting in a lack of sector coordination.

Water resources are currently managed by different government ministries, resulting in a lack of sector coordination.
Despite efforts to improve rural WASH provision in Zimbabwe, significant gaps remain, particularly in hard-to-reach and historically under-served areas with the additional geological and technical challenges. Coordination with other sector actors takes place at ward, district, provincial and national level; CAFOD and partners participate in these forums. This project is in line with the Zimbabwe National Sanitation and Hygiene Strategy , which states that public funds would focus, amongst other areas, on construction and management of institutional sanitation in schools, clinics, markets and other public places.

Building community resilience to climatic shocks, through improving food security, caring practices
Working in Gokwe North, and Gokwe South , this programme will improve the nutritional status of key vulnerable groups (including pregnant and lactating mothers, adolescent mothers, people with disabilities and people living with HIV [PLWHIV]) that have additional nutrition requirement and barriers in accessing them. We will address the underlying causes of malnutrition and target the entire community with increased food security, access to WASH and improved caring practices.
